Avalon + Stone Harbor

Why People Visit + Stay

7 Mile Island can be accessed from Exit 13 to Exit 10 off the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey’s southern region. The island consists of two beach resort towns: Avalon and Stone Harbor.

Situated at the northern end of 7 Mile Island, Avalon has one of the most extensive dune systems on the east coast and extends 1 mile farther into the ocean compared to its neighboring resorts. This unique coastline helps moderate local temperature and winds, and is the reason Avalon is often referred to as being “Cooler by a Mile.”

Stone Harbor makes up the southern half of the island, and is home to designated conservation areas, protected wildlife, and a Bird Sanctuary – in addition to stunning soft-sand beaches and surf.

Neighboring towns of Avalon and Stone Harbor share their rooted histories in farming, fishing, railroads, vacation travel and seaside pastimes.

From humble beginnings of island acres used for green pastures and cow farms, both towns evolved over the years into property and tourism development. Bridging creative innovations and a little risk-taking with practical sustainability.

Yesteryear memories and lore still linger – where visitors re-discover remnants and stories about famous piers and casinos, nights at local dance halls, “Bonnie and Clyde” costume parties, train tracks built on swing bridges over water, shipwrecks unearthed during winter’s changing tides, and tales of a man who sought refuge here during a storm.

Modern-day Avalon features shopping, dining, fishing, outdoor and recreational activities including a kayak park, tennis courts, playgrounds and sports fields – in addition to its gorgeous sandy beaches and surf. And with live concerts, recreational and educational programming, movies on the beach, and so much more, you’ll find Avalon has lots to offer throughout the year.

Stone Harbor features a one-of-a-kind shopping district, eateries and restaurants and a movie theater, offering a mix of activity and relaxation. With many amenities conveniently located in or within walking distance to the downtown area of 96th Street.

Whether you enjoy strolling to the weekly farmer’s market or street concerts in the summer, feeding your passion for watersports, or watching golden sunsets on the bay, you’ll soon discover a variety of things to see and do while you’re here in Stone Harbor.
