When planning your next beach days and Avalon summer vacation, you’ll need to know what’s allowed (and not allowed) at Avalon’s beaches, and where to go for different water and beach activities this summer season.
In this guide, you can find out about:
Lifeguard-Protected Beaches
For your safety and protection, bathing and swimming are permitted only at protected beaches where lifeguards are on duty from 10 am – 5 pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend.
Those who choose to swim outside these hours when lifeguards are on duty, or at a beach that’s not protected, do so at their own risk.
The Avalon Beach Patrol and Borough of Avalon reserve the right to reduce the number of guarded beaches or number of lifeguards assigned to designated beaches at any point during the summer, depending on available personnel – this occurs more often from the middle of August through Labor Day weekend.
Beachgoers are asked to enter the ocean only in the presence of a lifeguard (directly in front of or near lifeguard stands).
The following beaches are lifeguard-protected by members of the Avalon Beach Patrol:
• 9th, 12th, 15th, 18th, 21st, 24th, 26th, 28th, 30th (surfing-only beach), 32nd, 35th, 38th, 40th, 43rd, 50th, 57th, 61st, 65th, 69th, 73rd, 76th, and 79th Street beaches

Digging Holes on the Beach
Parents and individuals are asked to be mindful about unattended holes left on the beach strand – as these can cause injury to others, especially as night falls.
Please be sure you fill in any holes before you leave them unattended. Never climb into a hole that has been dug on the beach, as the sand may become unstable and cause an unintended entrapment.
