Stone Harbor is home to a number of designated conservation and protected wildlife areas, while Avalon has one of the most extensive and unique dune systems on the east coast.

Both sides of the island are actively involved in efforts to maintain the area’s flora, fauna, fragile eco-systems and micro-climates – through institutions and private organizations supported by local residents and homeowners.
