Repaving of 96th Street

The Borough of Stone Harbor has proposed to repave 96th Street, between Second and Third Avenues. Construction is scheduled to start in April 2024.

Please be advised there may be new traffic patterns or temporary ordinances in the area as a result. Plan your travel accordingly, allowing for extra time due to higher-than-normal traffic, travel delays and/ or congestion.

Playgrounds at 97th and 82nd Streets: New Exciting Upgrades

Two community playgrounds in Stone Harbor, located at 97th Street and 82nd Street, are set to undergo significant improvements aimed at providing even better play experiences for children of all abilities and ages.

The existing, outdated equipment has already been removed, with work to proceed on the 97th Street playground first.

At the 97th Street playground, the Borough is installing a brand-new, state-of-the-art, and inclusive playground: meaning more accessible equipment, innovative features, and engaging activities for children of all ages and abilities – including a sensory dome as the playground’s centerpiece for all to enjoy.

At the 82nd Street playground, the Borough is looking to incorporate the latest play trends and fitness equipment, transforming it into a showpiece and destination playground for the entire community. This summer, as work proceeds at the 97th Street playground and we await the arrival of these new playgrounds, there will be outdoor games and activities set up to enjoy at the 82nd Street area.

The Borough is eager to keep you informed of their progress on these new developments! Look for shared construction updates, anticipated completion dates, and sneak peeks at the new designs on the Borough’s website and social media channels.

While these two playgrounds undergo their transformations, visitors and residents are encouraged to explore Chelsea Park and all other attractions Stone Harbor has to offer!

Third Avenue Sewers Recently Relined

On March 8, 2024, the Borough of Stone Harbor announced their finalized plan for a critical infrastructure project: relining the sewers along Third Avenue.

This project is part of the major Third Avenue reconstruction, and will significantly improve the functionality and lifespan of these vital sewers with minimal disruption to the surrounding business.

The project was scheduled for March 11 – March 13, with relining work conducted on Third Avenue from 99th to 94 Streets, and bypass pumping operations implemented from 100th to 93rd Streets. Short-term traffic adjustments were needed, including “No Parking” signs and localized detours, as project benefits were deemed significant.

As noted by the Borough:

“Sewer relining is a far less disruptive alternative to full sewer replacement, saving the commercial district from a more extensive construction process. The successful completion of this project will ensure decades of improved service for these essential sewers.”
