Did you know you can get around the island this summer on a Jitney?!

If you’re not quite sure what a “Jitney” is or you’ve been hunting for details like price or how it works, here’s everything you need to know…

In this guide, you’ll find answers to questions like:

>  What’s a “Jitney?”

>  When does service start on 7 Mile Island?

>  How much is it?

>  Where does it actually start and stop, or go on the island?

>  How does it work?

>  What else should I know about the Jitney?

All information appearing on this page, including hours, fares, route locations or stops, are subject to change. Please contact the AC Jitney Association directly to confirm or further inquire about these services.

What exactly is a “Jitney?”

Well, it just might be the best idea ever – anywhere! Seriously.

Operated by the AC Jitney Association, these mini-bus shuttle services are one of the best ways to experience nightlife activities on 7 Mile. Perfect for any bar-hopping situation so you can have a safe, enjoyable evening out down the shore – whether you’re planning a lovely dinner out tonight or having late night drinks with friends!

Both Avalon and Stone Harbor have partnered with the AC Jitney Association to offer this ride-share service on the island again this year. It allows for reliable and affordable transportation between the two sister communities of the island during the evening and late night hours throughout the summer.

These 13-passenger Jitneys are also ADA-compliant, climate-controlled, and run on compressed natural gas so they’re considered to be more eco-friendly. The service may also cut down on issues like parking, traffic congestion, street accidents caused by a blinding setting sun or involving pedestrians, and drunk driving, among others.

So if you were hoping to try out that restaurant or bar on the other side of the island, but you don’t want to be driving anywhere,… now you know you should start thinking about taking the Jitney.

When does service start on 7 Mile Island?

Starting from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend in 2024, Jitney service will be operating on Fridays and Saturdays only, 6 pm – 2:30 am.

How much is it?

The fare to ride the Jitney is $3 this year, and it’s valid the entire route’s distance for the duration of any single trip. Each time you enter or exit the Jitney, you’ll be required to pay.

You may pay the driver in cash upon entry.

Where does it actually start and stop, or go on the island?

Here’s the base route of “the loop” so you can start making plans:

in Avalon

• starting from 20th Street and Dune Drive (near The Princeton), the Jitney heads south to 80th Street

• the Jitney makes a left onto 80th Street (heading toward the ICONA Windrift)

• the Jitney turns right (south) to go down First Avenue (parallel the beach and Recreation fields)

• the Jitney then makes a right (west) down 83rd Street (on a residential street past the Stone Harbor Recreation fields)

• the Jitney then makes a left (south) onto Second Avenue, until it reaches 96th Street (traffic light intersection at corner across from the Stone Harbor Library)

in Stone Harbor

• starting from the corner of 96th Street and Second Avenue (opposite the Stone Harbor Post Office), the Jitney turns right down 96th Street – passing by the 96th Street Bar & Grill, Harbor Square Theatre, Watering Hull, and other hot spots in the downtown

• the Jitney makes a right onto 96th Street to Third Avenue, and proceeds north on Ocean Drive in Avalon to 20th Street (back to The Princeton)

So that’s “the loop!”

Just ask when you need to get off along the route, or let the driver know in advance.

Please remember to be courteous to fellow riders, and avoid or minimize unnecessary distractions for the driver.

How does it work?

Passengers may wave for the Jitney at any corner along the proposed base route. The Jitney will pass by every corner on “the loop” at least every 10 minutes, so your wait for a Jitney is usually very short.

What else should I know about the Jitney?

• There’s a Jitney Surfer app that works a lot like other ride-share apps. You’ll be able to see where the nearest Jitney is on your smartphone, including the estimated time of arrival to your location. The app is available for download from the Google Play and Apple App stores.

• There’s also a Jitney service now in the Wildwoods, Ocean City & Cape May.
